Hello beautiess!!

It’s been ages since I’ve posted any DIY related posts on my blog. So I came up with this really interesting and a must-try easy and affordable DIY Pressed Glitter Eyeshadow Palette. Being makeup enthusiasts and makeup junkies, I’m sure everybody loves glitter eyeshadows, but when it comes to investing in high-end international brands nobody really wanna empty their wallets on just one single eyeshadow pan because each pan costs a hell lot. Here’s a solution for all you girls out there, where I tried out different formulas and finally came up with what worked out the best.

Here’s what you’ll need –

  1. Loose Glitter (any eyeshadow/body glitter works, but not the crafts glitter). You can find it HERE
  2. Empty eyeshadow Palette (preferably with the pans, or you can buy pans separately and the empty palette separately and then assemble them). You can find it HERE
  3. Rubbing Alcohol (any brand of your choice, but don’t use any surgical spirit as you don’t wanna make your makeup smell as spirit and moreover the spirit smell lingers for ages in the makeup). You can find it HERE
  4. Glycerin (preferably 100% pure glycerin). You can find it HERE
  5. Aloe Vera Gel (preferably 100% pure, I used Patanjali aloe vera gel)
  6.  Mixing BowlSyringe/dropper/measuring spoons and spatula/toothpicks

Now comes the most crucial part – ratio of the ingredients. The right ratios gives the correct consistency and the perfect glitter shadows. All we need  is –

  • 3 parts Alcohol
  • 2 parts Glycerin
  • 1 part Aloe Vera Gel

This is the universal formula for preparing any pressed glitter eyeshadow. You may slightly alter the ratios accordingly to your convenience anyway once you try and test with different formulas. I did very slightly increase my glycerin, as I wanted a much creamy consistency. But I suggest you to  start with 3:2:1 ratio for beginners.

  • Step 1 : Into a small mixing bowl, mix the Alcohol, Glycerin and Aloe Vera Gel in the prescribed ratios. Mix the concoction really well, we don’t want any lumps of the gel.
  • Step 2 : Pump the syringe with the concoction. Don’t worry, you can fill it full, no particular measurement for this.
  • Step 3 : Into the empty pan, fill it half or maybe 3/4th with the loose glitter powder, spread it evenly. Now very carefully and slowly pump out the concoction little at a time. The glitter will be completely soaked in the concoction. The consistency should be a creamy one. You’ll know it while mixing the glitter.
  • Step 4 : Spread the glitter evenly in the pan. Just tap the pans to ensure there’re no air gaps inside. Don’t press it right away when its still not set, as it soaks up all the mixture and you’ll mess up everything.
  • Step 5 : Set the pans aside for max 1-2 days. Once set, you can use a coin or any pan-sized round thing wrapped in a tissue to press the shadow in. If you’re still not satisfied with it setting, you can still leave it aside for a day more to try using them.
  • Step 6 : Voila!! You made your own pressed glitter eyeshadows. Once you get hold of the formula  and the correct consistency and all, you can play with different glitters, mix and match colors and make unicorn glitters too.

You are all done with glitter eyeshadows and you can make your own pressed glitter palette.

Apart from preparing the glitter shadows, there are few points to keep in mind.

  1. Always use makeup glitters or body glitters for making diy glitter shadows. DO NOT USE any crafts glitter as they may irritate and damage your eyes.
  2. Always use store-bought Aloe Vera gel, because it contains some preservatives and this is what preserves our glitter formula for long. DO NOT USE natural Aloe Vera as for a prolonged period, it causes bacteria in it.
  3. DO NOT USE surgical spirit in place of rubbing alcohol. In India it is hard to find rubbing alcohol, I know it. I initially used surgical spirit to make one pan of glitter eyshadow and I regret doing it, as even after 3-4 days of setting it, that spirit smell didn’t go.
  4. And finally, since these are self made, DO NOT expect them to be waterproof and smudgeproof. But I’m sure you’ll love them as much as your store bought glitter shadows😊.

I hope that was helpful. Lemme know if you guys try this out! untitled1

  1. Hello, Im at loss, I’ve followes step by step and everytime the glitter pans never dry out like they should..They end up thick and super wet.Even a few days after mixing everything together.. it still has a consistancy of the aloe and glycerin pretty much.. im using 99% alcohol,100% pure aloe gel and vegetable glycerin.. 3-2-1.. now ive also tried just mixing alcohol and glycerin.. that turned out alot better but still alittle dry.. any advice Would be so greatly appreciated thank you

    • These will have slightly a gel consistency, which is what makes them pick properly and stick on to the eyes properly. OR Probably you’re mixing too much of the liquid into the glitter powder. Just make sure its enough to mix comfortably, and try drying it in sun. I’m sure the alcohol pretty much evaporates after at least 2-3 days max.
